LGBT: What do you think?

This race was a nail biter until the very last votes were counted, but we have emerged victorious! I will now have the privelege of being the first Republican to represent the Gay-Straight Alliance in the Associated Students Senate on this campus! Tonight, you made possible what many called impossible; and I'm grateful that you did. The left-leaning leaders in the LGBT rights movement have lost touch with those they represent lately, and their fumbling has allowed legisltion like Proposition 8 to pass. Tonight, LGBT students on this campus voted for change and they voted for Republicans to take our movement in a new direction; and that is exactly what I intend to do. I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for this victory, but our struggle doesn't end with election victories. The fight to obtain equal rights for all Americans will continue for years to come. I won't stop fighting for that cause; in fact, tonight, I'm more determined than ever. While the outcome of this election is ground-shaking, let us not mistake it as an imbrace of the Republican Party by the LGBT community. This is merely a second chance for our party to be the champion for civil rights and liberties that it once was. Let us return to the party of Lincoln, who freed the slaves. Let us return to the party of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the struggle for equality. Together, we can restore our party's founding principles of the advocation of limited, constitutional government that protects our civil rights and liberties. Thank you, good night, God bless you all, and God bless America!
