What makes people bite their nails?

i'm a nail biter myself (also trying stop) and was just thinking, y do ppl bite in the 1st place? ALSO if u no any ways 2 help stop biting (other than using that no bite nail varnish stuff) then plz tel me! thaankyou :) x
